Subject 346 compound complex
Date May 24, 2012, 10:44 am
留言內容 您好,
我想請問 compound complex sentence 結構為 Dependence, Independence, Independence. 其中Indepence 大於或等於 2, dependence大於或等於1. ex: Because he is always late, I didn't invite him, but I told him the party was canceled.
我想請問的是, 如果例句1為: Although he was sick, he still attended the meeting because it was his last chance.
例句2: When one makes white ginger, one scrapes the roots before one dries them.此二句結構為 Dependent, Independent, Dependent 並不符合 compound complex sentence 規則, 是否就不符合文法結構?
感謝您

留言內容 Hi Elisa,

還是點問題想在請問一下
He speaks not only English but also Spanish.
可以寫成下面的倒裝句嗎?
Not only English but also Spanish does he speak.
Not only does he speak English, but he also speaks Spanish.

原句要改為倒裝句的話要先把Not onl置句首和連接兩個相對應的子句才能改為倒裝句.
請問上面的倒裝句Not only English but also Spanish does he speak.
not only引導不是子句為什麼也可以改成倒裝句呢???這寫法是對的嗎????

留言內容 Hi Elisa,

想請問以下的句子
One day after she finished her chemical experiment in the midnight, she was locked out the dorm.
One day after she finished her chemical experiment in the midnight>是副詞子句嗎??還是one day是名詞而after.......是形容詞來修飾one day????

上面的句子和下面這句是一樣的嗎?
The year before they got married he sent her roses twince a day.
我可以把這句寫成 The year before they got married, he sent her roses twince a day. ???????

When was she locked out of the dorm?
=> “after she finished her chemical experiment in the midnight” is an adverbial clause.
=> One day, after she finished her chemical experiment in the midnight, she was locked out of the dorm.
=> She was locked out of the dorm one day, after she finished her chemical experiment in the midnight.
** It is redundant to add “one day” in the above sentences.

We have agreed to meet the day after tomorrow.
=> “The day after tomorrow” is adverbial phrase.
=> When have we agreed to meet? The day after tomorrow.

The day after she finished her chemical experiments is her graduation day.
=> In this sentence, “after she finished her chemical experiments” is used to describe “the day”. “The day after she finished her chemical experiments” is a noun clause as a subject of verb.

When will we meet her?
(1) Tomorrow.
(2) When she comes to town.

You can say:
We will meet her tomorrow.
Or replace "tomorrow" with "when she comes to town". To say "tomorrow when she comes to town" is rather redundant,

He sent her roses twice a day before they got married.
Before they got married, he sent her roses twice a day.
=> Like I said earlier, adding "the year" is redundant.

留言內容 Hi Elisa,

There is ______ food for them all.
(a) no enough (b) too enough (c) much enough (d) not enough

想請問這題硬要選一個答案要選not enough?
not是副詞, 而enough是形容詞; 而no enough是形容詞加形容詞,所以選not enough比較正確嗎???

The correct usage is "NOT enough". It is the one and the only correct way to say it. There is no comparison of which one is more accurate. "NO enough" is simply WRONG.

It is like the word "funner" and "funnest". They are not accepted word usage.

I can't tell you why. It is similar to why you use certain words in Chinese and you cannot explain why.
Subject 339 as well as

留言內容 Hi Elisa,
上次問的問題還有些想再請教一下
He is rich as well as me. (NOT He, as well as I/me, is rich.) --->請問
(1) He, as well as I/me, is rich---->這句為什麼不能這樣寫呢, 要怎麼改呢?
(2) He is rich as well as I.
=He as well as I is rich.
=He is as rich as I.
想請問以上三句句子可以相等嗎??
(3) as well as 可以連接兩個相同的詞
You can sail on the lake as well as swim in it.
---> as well as 連接兩個動詞.
He hurt his arm, as well as breaking his leg. (NOT as well as broke his leg.) ---->請問這句as well as breaking為什麼 要用breaking????不能用broke???

(1) Probably because "as well as" is a conjunction, so no comma after "as well as". Look at it this way. He, and I, are rich. How does that sound to you? Again, I would say that this is a very awkward and informal sentence and I would suggest rewrite the sentence to: He and I are rich. He is rich, and so am I.

See http://elisaenglish.pixnet.net/blog/post/45114957

(2)
He is rich as well as I (am).
= He is rich and I am rich too. (His wealth may be higher than mine or the same as mine but we cannot tell from this sentence as it did not reveal the amount of wealth that he and I have)
= Both he and I are rich.
= He is rich, and so am I.

He as well as I is rich. (This is a very awkward sentence. I would not use it when there are better ways to say it. For example: He and I are rich. )

He is as rich as I (am).
= The amount of wealth he has is the same as the amount of wealth that I have.
= He and I are equally rich.

(3)
Treating "as well as" as conjunction, the version with parallel structure is use. I would prefer the version with parallel structure.
=> Personally, I prefer formal English. In this case, treating it as conjunction. I would write it as:
He hurt his arm as well as broke his leg.
= He hurt his arm and broke his leg as well.
= He hurt his arm and broke his leg.

The gerund (-ing form) is used when a verb comes after a preposition:
In this case, some are treating "as well as" as preposition, hence the gerund form.
=> He hurt his arm as well as breaking his leg.

留言內容 Hi Elisa,

As requested, I have sent the samples by Fedex with tracking number 123.
想請問as requested--->這裡有省略哪寫字呢?

Tks~
Ashley
版主回覆
As "they were" requested, I have sent ....
=> they -- the samples

It might be easier to understand if you change the order of the sentence:
I have sent the samples as requested by Fedex with tracking number 123.

Where "it is" possible, I will try to upgrade you to a larger room.
=> it -- to upgrade you to a larger room.

=> I will try to upgrade you to a larger room where possible.

There is a different in meaning.

There is not enough food for them all => We have some food but we don't have enough food to give so that every one of them will have the chance to eat.

There is no food for them all => We don't have any food to give to them.
