Elisa 文法講解
1. Whether he comes tomorrow or not, we'll have the party. 這句子中是因為whether 和 or not連用,he comes tomorrow 為副詞子句嗎? 所以 comes 用現在式?
When the main clause verb is in the future tense, the verb in the subordinate adverbial clause is in the simple present.
2. Alice often asks her mom if she will be pretty when she grows up .句中 if 所引導的是補詞,當名詞子句嗎?,為何要用will be
To avoid ambiguity, we sometimes use a future tense in a subordinate clause to emphasize that the action expressed is related to the future, instead of the present. In addition, present tense is not used because there is still the uncertainty in the future. ** She wants to know if she will be pretty in the future. ** She wants to know if I will attend the meeting tomorrow.
In General, Simple Future cannot be used in clauses beginning with time expressions. Therefore, simple present is used => when she “grows” up.
** She will be pretty when she grows up. <There is the possibility that she will not be pretty>
** Will she be pretty when she grows up?
If she will be pretty …. => 副詞子句
3. If it rains tomorrow, we'll not go outside. 這句話的 if 和第二題有什麼不一樣? if 引導的是?詞子句? 為何要用現在式代替未來式?
The First Conditional (Type 1) 現在或未來可能成為事實的條件句
In this case, it is 未來可能成為事實的 (Future Real Conditional)

For example:
If he gets in town within 2 hours, I will be able to pick him up.
If it rains tomorrow => 副詞子句
** Overall, when we refer to the future in adverbial clause or in conditional clauses, we normally use present simple tense.
For example:
I will give you a ride as soon as I finish my lunch.
If he comes again, I will take him out for dinner.
In General, Simple Future cannot be used in clauses beginning with time expressions. Therefore, simple present is used => when she “grows” up.
