一日為師, 終生為父

I would translate it as:

Once a teacher, for life a father-figure.

Or,

If you are a teacher for a day, you are a father-figure for life.

  • Hi, Elisa,
    A) It was not until the night we won the  battle election that I realize my best friend was a XXX supporter.
    B) Not until the night we won the  battle  election  did I realize my best friend was a XXX supporter.
In my grammar book, "not until " will use as 強調句或倒裝句,但是我又看到這樣的寫法
My real study of English began much later in life, in fact, not until I was half through my college education when I was being trained as a miming engineer.
    C) I was aware that my best friend was a XXX supporter, not until we won the battle election on that night.
如果C)句也可以這樣寫,那倒裝句就沒有必要性了, 因為有人說過,我寫倒裝句有如刹雞用牛刀,which means--I use a long knife as a tool to kill a chicken.  When I use simple sentence, he gives me another advice --that is to add some more verb phrases in articles.  I am neither an English major nor a native speaker.  I am sometimes frustrated.   I have been studying hard in my spare time, and now am stuck in brain which is dried out.  Thank you for listening.
  • Inversion is used to emphasize sentences.  It is writing which reverses the usual order of words (S-V-C structure).  See http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/elisa-world/article?mid=165&prev=179&next=73&l=f&fid=13

Maybe the following examples will help clarify your confusion about the usage of “Not until” used in front of the sentence as an inverted sentence and “not ….. until” or “not until” in the middle of the sentence.

    1.   I did not realize that my best friend was a xxx supporter until the night we won the election battle.
= Not until the night we won the election battle did I realize my best friend was a XXX supporter.

    2.  I was not aware that my best friend was a XXX supporter until we won the election battle on that night.
= Not until we won the election was I aware that my best friend was a xxx supporter.

    3.  It is not over until you win.
= Not until you win is it over.

    4.  You are not guilty until you are proven guilty of the murders.
= Not until you are proven guilty of the murders are you guilty.

    5.  I did not like cheese, not until that I was pregnant.
= Not until I was pregnant did I like cheese.

    6.  My real study of English began much later in life, not until that I was half through my college education.
=> Not until I was half through my college education did my real study of English begin.

    7.  Knowledge is not power, not until that knowledge leads to some kind of transformation.
= Not until knowledge leads to some kind of transformation is knowledge power.

    8.  I will wait for you at the train station until 9pm, not until 10pm.
