The statement "You are something else" can be interpreted differently when used in different situations.  It can be negative or positive depending on the tone of the voice. 

(1) Something else can be a compliment, meaning that you are unlike someone else and that you are someone special, unique or extraordinary.

For example:

Though he is not Einstein, he is something else.  He truly strikes to be someone unique and with great wisdom.

(2) Something else can be sarcasm, meaning that I think that you are an oddball; you are unlike anyone that we have seen.  You are a strange person.    You are such a complete weirdo.  You are someone different compared to another character.

For example:

(a  (a) I have to say that you are truly something else not able to take the hint.

(    (b)In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird”:  Jem and I found our father satisfactory; he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment.   Calpurnia was something else again.  She was all angles and bones; she was nearsighted; she squinted; her hand was wide as a bed slat and twice as hard.  She was always ordering me out of the kitchen, …..    

(3) Something else can also used to mean that you are amazing or entertaining.

For example:

Jonathan is really something else to tell a joke like that.
