露出馬腳, 露出原形自己, 露出本性, 露出狐狸尾巴
Show the cloven foot; Show the cloven hoof
Betray the cloven foot; Betray the cloven hoof
Give oneself away
Some people thought that you can also use the phrase “to let the cat out of the bag” to describe “露出馬腳, 露出原形自己, 露出本性, 露出狐狸尾巴”.
Actually, there is a difference.
To let the cat out of the bag is more about revealing a secret by accident (洩露出秘密)
For example:
1. You are going to propose to your girlfriend tomorrow but your dad is so happy that he let the cat out of the bag (by telling her) in advance.
To describe “露出馬腳, 暴露出原形, 露出(惡毒的)本性 or 露出狐狸尾巴”, I would say “to give oneself away” or “to show (betray) the cloven foot (hoof)”.
For example:
He finally shows the cloven foot by divorcing her right after he gets her inheritance.
