(1) What is usually used interrogatively as a request for specific information, about the character, occupation, etc., of a person, the origin, identity, etc., of something, the worth, usefulness, force, or importance of something.

What do you think … Usually used to ask someone’s opinion about something. 

Question: What do you think of Heathcliff at Wuthering Heights ?

= What is your opinion of Heathcliff at Wuthering Heights ?

Answer: I think he is a tragic character because of the treatment he received from his adopted family.  His personality was molded by the people around him.  I would say that he was rather innocent and pitiful.    

Question: What do you think of wealth without friends?

= What is your opinion of wealth without friends?

Answer:  I think that it is always a pity to have wealth without friends as you have nobody to share your joy with, nobody to …….

 

(2) How is usually used to ask “in what way”, “to what degree”, or “in what condition”

How do you think .. Usually used to ask someone’s feeling of the extent of something. 

Question:  How do you think (that) the accident happened?

= In what way do you think (that) the accident happened?

Answer: I think that it was a drunk driver turning into the opposite lane and had a head-on collision with a semi-truck.

Question: How do you think Mary will be punished?

= To what degree do you think that Mary will be punished?

Answer: I think that she will only get a timeout.
