中翻英:  相見歡 - 詩詞翻譯

I like this poem.  It sounds so sentimental.  These are some of my translations.  Since I am not very good in Chinese, I may not get the meaning of the poem completely.  If I have misinterpreted the meaning of the poem from the source I found, please provide me your comments.

 相見歡     南唐‧李煜

無言獨上西樓,月如鉤,

寂寞梧桐深院鎖清秋。

剪不斷, 理還亂,

是離愁,

別是一般滋味在心頭。

=> This is the meaning that I got from 六上詩詞注釋

Another translation of  寂寞梧桐深院鎖清秋 that I have read is:

鎖著

I think that this one has a better interpretation and I based my translation upon this..

These are the different versions of my translation:

Joy at Meeting

(1) Taciturnly, I step up the west pavilion in gloom,

Only to find the illuminating crescent moon

Loneliness is like the Tree Empress,

Hovering alone in the cavernous terrace,

Locking the somber autumn.

Nugatory to sever, messy to unravel.

It is the sorrow of farewell.

Unable to load, a different kind of feeling in mind.

(2) Reticently, I step up the west pavilion in gloom,

Only to find the illuminating crescent moon.

Loneliness is like the cavernous terrace,

Where solitarily stands the Tree Empress,

Locked in the somber autumn.

Sunder to no avail, disentangle into disarray,

It is the melancholy of going away,

Unable to alleviate, another kind of feeling at heart.

(3) Taciturnly, I climb atop the west pavilion in gloom,

Only to find the illuminating crescent moon.

Loneliness is like the cavernous terrace,

Where desolately spires the Tree Empress,

Locked in the somber autumn.

Slash to no avail, untangle into disarrangement.

It is the melancholy of banishment,

Unable to divert, instilled in a heart a different kind of sentiment.

As for the usage of 剪不斷, 理還亂, you can use it as follows to describe the situation you are in with your lover.

For example:

(a) Even though our love is nugatory to sever and messy to unravel, I still can’t stop my love for you.

(b) Sundering to no avail, disentangling into disarray, I continue to fall in love with him.
