Explicating a poem

An explication of a poem is an explanation, interpretation or analysis.  It discusses the poem’s form, type of rhyme scheme (abab, abbacc).  It discusses the poem’s tone and theme.  It analyzes important techniques (metaphor, simile or alliteration).

(2) Discuss the tone, setting, and situation in the poem.

Essay = a short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative. 短論

Discuss the tone.

The tone of the poem expresses the attitude of the poet towards the theme that he/she is carrying out.

For example:  Is it sarcastic?  Is it pessimistic?  Is it excited?  Is it humorous? Is it enthusiastic?  Is it dark?  Is it dreary?  Is it melancholy?  Is it oppressive?  Is the tone complex?  Is there a combination of tones? Does the tone shift?

For example:

In The Park by Gwen Harwood

(see link for the entire poem: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/in-the-park-5/ )

She sits in the park. Her clothes are out of date.
Two children whine and bicker, tug her skirt.
A third draws aimless patterns in the dirt
Someone she loved once passed by – too late

……
…….. Then, nursing
the youngest child, sits staring at her feet.
To the wind she says, “They have eaten me alive.”

The tone of the poem is a discontent towards life and sarcasm towards motherhood as her children devour her life and her freedom with the ending statement: To the wind she says, "They have eaten me alive."

It may also have a hint of sadness and regret with the decisions she made in the past that changed her life as stated in “Someone she once loved passes by- too late” and in “Then, nursing the youngest child, sits staring at her feet.”

(3) To analyze the use of language in the poem

For example:  Is the language formal, colloquial, abstract, concrete, vivid, or vague?

In the Park by Gwen Harwood, the language is simplistic and vivid, exploring the nature of motherhood.
