Type 2 - Present Unreal:

If John were to give up on drinking coffee, he would be feeling miserable all day.

=> It is highly unlikely that John will give up on drinking coffee as he will be feeling miserable all day.

 

If I were to be assigned to work on ten projects at a time, I would die from stress.

=> It is fortunate that I am not assigned with ten projects at a time, so I can avoid dying from stress.

 

If only I had more time, I would be able to juggle all the workload.

=> I have very little time, so I am unable to juggle all the workload.

 

I wish I had more time, so I would be able to juggle all the workload.

=> I have very little time, so I am unable to juggle all the workload.

 

What if John married Sarah?  Would that make things any better?

= Should I grow to be like a giant, I would have trouble buying clothes.

=> It is unlikely that I will grow to be like a giant, so I don’t have trouble buying clothes.

 

 

Type 3 - Past Unreal

If Joe were to have been laid off, he would have lost his house from missing mortgage payments.

=> Luckily, Joe was not laid off, so he was able to keep his house without missing any mortgage payment.

 

I wish I had given him my phone number.

=> Too bad.  I did not give him my phone call, so he could not call me.

 

If only I had purchased the house.

=> I did not purchase the house and I am regretting now.

 

What if John had married Sarah?  Would that have make things any better? 

=> John did not marry Sarah.  Even if he did, it is questionable that it would change anything in the past.  

 

Supposing Tim had won the lottery.

=> Tim did not win the lottery, so he is still poor.
