I am out of ideas and would like to ask you to provide any suggestion to me on how to improve Yahoo Knowledge site.

I was given a political response regarding to my suggestions.  Anyway, if you have any good idea around how to correct the existing problems within Yahoo Knowledge, please let me know.  Please list your suggestion right next to the issues you identify.  Your identity will be kept in secret.  I will try to present them if they are sound; though, I cannot guarantee that they will be accepted.  However, it never hurts to try.

Anyway, that will be my mission during these three months as a 英文分類管理員.  I hope that I won’t get defeated or discouraged too easily.  I hate to be a scarecrow.  Not that scarecrow is a bad thing.

*** Note:

If you are going to provide me a list of all the inaccurate best answers, please make sure that they are truly wrong.  As I said, my spare time is limited, so I don't want to waste it reviewing false allegation.

Your concern is similar to 曾笨.  There are a lot of people with very little English language ability answering questions, providing inaccurate grammar and word usage.  It is bad that they were being picked as the best answers.  That is why I have suggested removing the voting system and keep all the answers, so at least people won't be misled to believe that the best answers are always the right answers.
If the best answers selected were using online translator, you can always report that to Yahoo management and they will take care of that.  The message I got is very positive on this.  If verified that the best answers were using online translator or full of basic grammar errors or just outright wrong, they will be removed.  People have been providing lists of wrong answers to me.  After confirming the validity of the accuse that the best answers were outright wrong, I will submit that to Yahoo management.
As for the best answers with only a few grammar or word usage errors, the suggestion I got was to write a critique about it, so people will know where the best answers were wrong.  I read the questions you answered.  Your English is not bad.  I have provided my corrections on the grammar errors of the best answers selected.
Yes.  As you indicated, we are in this together if we want to improve the accuracy of the site.  I need the help from everyone with good English lanaguage ability to identify to me where the problems and the wrong answers are.
I do have very limited spare time, juggling between work and my family.  So any help from you guys is greatly appreciated.
By the way, I do want to stress this to everyone.  If you are going to provide me a list of all the inaccurate best answers, please make sure that they are truly wrong.  As I said, my spare time is limited, so I don't want to waste it reviewing false allegation.
    Thanks for leaving your comments.

  • Hi Elisa,I feel like one of the most prominent and discouraging problems is that people who don't necessarily know English that well are responding to questions and giving answers that are poorly written or just plain wrong.  In addition, these people don't seem to know or want to admit that they're wrong.  I suggest that Yahoo Knowledge come up with some sort of testing or "certification" system where people have to prove their skills (or lack of skills...) and are  then identified by their skill level rather than just points (such as native speaker, fluent, beginner, etc.) .  I understand that the purpose of Yahoo Knowledge is to create a collaborative environment, but in the case of the English categories, it is extremely difficult for people who don't already know English to make good judgments about what is right or wrong.  By showing someone's "certification" through some form of a standardized test will help people better identify the correct answers.  This may seem elitist, but I honestly think that it has to be done.  Or else Yahoo Knowledge is nothing but a discussion forum where people can say whatever they want, and the points are just arbitrary.  I will think some more and give you better feedback... but this is the first thing that came to mind.
  • Hi,
I am sorry that I have to pour a bucket of cold water on you!  What you suggested was something not feasible.  The problem you raised occurred in Yahoo Answers in America too.  It would be impossible and asking too much of Yahoo to assess everyone's language ability as it is not an education system.
Even in the US where English literacy is higher, you will still encounter questions provided with misleading answers or plain incorrect answers.  I have suggested that Yahoo Knowledge forgo the best answer system and leave all other answers visible to the public.  Others can always provide comments and supporting points to argue against the wrong answers.  I thought that would be a better way as instituted by most English forums.  This way, nobody is led to believe that the best answer is the right answer.  However, nobody responded to my suggestion and I don't think that it was being considered.  The respond I got is to write a critique to challenge the wrong answers.  Anyway, who has all that time to do that.
Anyway, thanks for providing your feedback.  If there are more, please let me know.
