2008 America ’s presidential election is finally over.  The result was kind of what we had expected.  The American people are tired of Bush, a Republican president, as a president for 8 years and are looking for changes.

My son's school has "kids vote".  Of course, the votes do not count because they are not of voting age yet.  I kind of know the reason why my son voted "Obama" not because of us.  We don't discuss that with kids.  We voted for McCain for the long standing support that Republicans have shown towards Taiwan , for foreign policy and economic reasons.

Anyway, back to my son.  He voted for Obama because he thought that McCain is too old and will die any time.  I told him that we should not have discrimination against older people and should not judge people by appearance.  It is probably hard for him to understand at his age.

As for Obama, he is facing a tough road ahead of him with the recession currently occurring in the US .  This recession is likely going to stay for the entire year of 2009 and who knows how long it will take to recover.  I am seeing a lot of layoffs in the financial industry and it is now spreading to other industries.

In addition, Obama will need a huge help with foreign policy especially dealing with Iran , the middle-east countries, N. Korea , and etc.  I do hope that he gets a good aid to help him deal with foreign countries, and hope that he will not yield to China too much and put Taiwan at risk, which was what the Democratic Party usually did in the past.

I have a huge concern of Obama’s lack of experience.  Anyway, we will see how things go and if he can carry out what he said in his campaign, which is probably too high a target for any candidate, as they usually promised more than they could deliver.

I like McCain and I actually feel good that he did not get elected.  As it is not a good time to become the America ’s President.  For Obama, people should probably take that into consideration before they judge his performance.  It is tough to be the American President now.

For the last note, I do think that with Obama being the American president, it is good that Ma was elected as Taiwan ’s President since Obama is pro-Chinese communist government.  If Hsieh was elected, he would have a tough time dealing with the American government.

  • Ha!ha! Deja Vu!! My son also had the kids vote in his school , he also voted for Obama, and he had exactly the same reason as your son:「McCain is too old.」Then I said to him exactly the same thing you said to your son:「Don't judge people by their age.」
    子曰:「老而不死,是為賊.」唉~~等我們老了,不知他們會不會也嫌棄我們老呢?小孩子的想法真的越來越難理解了.

  • First of all, congratulation to the US on making such a breathtaking history.  When Obama was announced as the winner, Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" kept ringing in my ear.. this is it!  Also, McCain was so gracious in his conceding speech, he has really given this historical campaign a perfect finish.  I would like to see him continue to lead the US and the rest of world out of the economical turmoil together with the President and the Congress.Speaking of the tasks ahead, there's no doubt that Obama faces a tough assignment.  The mess of Wall St has engulfed the Main Sts around the world in tsunami fashion, and no one is immuned.  Confidence is all time low, and I think, unfortunately, we may not see the light at the other end of the tunnel until the next decade (2011 is my prediction before the confidence is restored based on economical cycle analysis).  Nevertheless, in Chinese, there is "opportunity" in the word "crisis", and this is exactly what Obama said.  President Lincoln was remembered for the Civil War, President Roosevelt was remembered for his policies in the Great Depression, President Kennedy was remembered for Cuba crisis, and now, President Obama will always be remembered for this Financial Crisis regardless of the final outcome.  Let's have some faith in him, and hopefully he can create another famous piece of history by leading people out of this mess.
  • I do hope that he has good financial aids to help him get through this tough economy.  It is not easy.  Not that I don't have faith in him or anyone in his position.  I am in the financial industry and I feel first hand the impact to this industry.  There is nothing that we can do to prevent all these massive layoffs and bankruptcy filed from well-established big corporations.  It is really really bad.  I really don't pay any attention to it anymore or should I say "can't pay any attention to it" because there is nothing you can do about it.  Worrying will not help you get through this.  Trying to get out of it is also impossible.  As you said, no one is immune from this.
I will be an ostrich and get on my merry life.  Sorry.  I can't help but complain once in a while.
