Meaning:

To show sorrow that is insincere

To pretend that one is weeping.

 

Examples:

    1.   To shed crocodile tears is to show false sympathy for someone. The perfect example of this is when Ma pretended to show his sympathy when mourning for the death of the fisherman while counting out the time to mourn in silence.

 

    2.   Political leaders are very good at crying crocodile tears to lie to and manipulate the people they serve.

 

    3.  The crook pretended to apologize for the scam but he was only crying crocodile tears to get away from the punishment.
