Compose vs. Comprise vs. Constitute

1.  Compose (v.): to make up, to constitute, to form, 組成

ð      The Taiwanese Student Association is composed of students from Taiwan

ð The Taiwanese Student Association is constituted of students from Taiwan.

ð Students from Taiwan compose the Taiwanese Student Association.

2.  Comprise (v.): to contain (all of the components are stated), 包含, 由構成

 

 

ð   The Taiwanese Student Association comprises students from Taiwan.

ð The dish comprises eight ingredients. 

 

** The parts compose the whole. 

The whole comprises all the parts and nothing less.

The whole is composed of the parts.

The whole is constituted of the parts.

The whole is comprised of the parts.  (X)
