I really don't have time to put too much thought into this, as I am leaving for my vacation tomorrow and there are tons of things to do before we leave.  This will be the last article I write in 2009.  I am not satified with this poem but I really don't have time to think.  I will rewrite it when I am back from my vacation in 2010.  Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

I have been putting off reading “The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” by Randy Pausch until now, mainly because I can hardly find any spare time to read.

Professor Pausch, a computer science professor from Carnegie Mellon University, was asked to speak at the lecture series: Journeys to share his reflections and insights on his personal and professional journey at the school on September 18, 2007.  This lecture series used to be called the Last Lecture.  Ironically, Professor Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the time, with only 2-5 months of good health left.  This was indeed his last lecture.  Professor Pauch died on July 25, 2008.

I really don’t know how to write a book review about “Le Petite Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.  This book masquerades as children's literature for its deceptively simple prose and poetry.  The words are so simple, yet I could not grasp the profound meaning and the deep wisdom behind them.  I see this as a book about humanity and spirituality.  The book is full of metaphors, metaphors of introspection, of how to live a life, of what matter in life – love and responsibility – and of the priorities in life.  The messages are delivered through the little prince’s innocent questions that sought only the truth and through his understanding of himself and of the life and people he encountered.

I was talking to my husband about the articles on my blog and threw in a statement that he probably hadn’t read my articles.  To my surprise, he said that he just visited my blog yesterday. I was astonished by his comment.  Why was I astonished?  Maybe we have given each other too much private space.  Not that we don’t care for each other, but that we believe in trust in our marriage.  Anyway, he told me he was intrigued by the question I posted to him the other day about the length of our slope and the constant nagging of wanting to have an ultra compact camera that fitted in my purse, so he decided to check into my site and see what’s cooking there.  I was quite surprised that he managed to find my blog in a sea of information.  He said he just typed “Elisa English forum” and, voilà, there showed my site.

Wow!  Now I have to be extra careful of what I put on my blog concerning him.  Not that there is anything I would hide from him but that I probably couldn’t beat him up too much on my blog.  By the way, I don’t believe that I have beaten him up at all.  Honey, if you are reading, I truly didn’t speak any ill of you.  Anyway, my husband is a very reasonable and considerate person.  I am not sucking up.  Truly, I swear!

Perfect Sense, recommended from the National Council for Gifted Children, is a riddle game to uncover a word using clues related to the five senses. (www.patchproducts.com)

Today, I am not going to talk about the game.  Rather, I would like to talk about our teaching philosophy and our child-rearing theory.

I don’t eat much sweet but I do from time to time indulge myself in chocolate.  Not much, probably close to a dozen pieces of Dove chocolates a week.  That weights roughly 3.25 oz.  There are roughly 35 pieces in a bag, so I would go through them in probably 3 weeks.  I don’t always buy them and stack them in my office.  This way, I won’t eat more than I need to.  So, in a year, I would probably only go through 2-3 bags at most.

Snow Sledding

My son recently asked to invite his friends over for play dates and he indicated that one of his friends would like to come over to our house again for snow sledding like they did last year.  I have no idea how long our slope is.  I know that it is longer than 2 stories high.  I kept giving out wrong information to people.  Anyway, to set the record straight, I decided to ask my husband.  He said to me that the slope should be roughly 50 feet long (about 15 meters or 16.67 yards).  Okay, now you have it.  Our neighbor, two houses next to ours, has a slope of close to 70 feet long (about 21 meters or 23.33 yards).  My son’s school, within 5 minutes walking distance, has a slope close to 200 feet (about 6o meters or 66.67 yards).

These are some enlightening words of wisdom from Benjamin Franklin that I came across reading this article: http://ifreemans.org/blogs/formosa/2009/09/17/previously-unrevealed-2-28-account-chinese/

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety

- Benjamin Franklin

** Updated 12/11/09:

If you have been faithfully reading my articles, you probably have come across an article that I wrote in rage, stating that I am ashamed to be associated with any so-called Taiwanese (who do not truly identify themselves as Taiwanese but in camouflage disguise themselves as one), eager to comprise any Taiwanese human rights, afraid to intimidate the Communist China, looking out for their own short-term interest, or just plain dreaming to unite with China and be part of a Communist Chinese.  I am proud to be a Taiwanese.  Whenever people ask if I am a Chinese, my answer would always be “NO, I am a TAIWANESE”.  To me, Taiwan is not and has never been part of the Communist China.  I am sad that some Taiwanese had elected Ma to be the Taiwanese President when he never admits to be or once in his action acts like a Taiwanese President because he never thinks of Taiwan as a country.

Past Perfect vs. Past Perfect Continuous / Past Perfect Progressive (過去完成式 vs. 過去完成進行式)

1.  Past Perfect Continuous states actions or events that are still in progress up to a point in time in the past, while Past Perfect states actions or events that are completed.  The emphasis is on the result when using the past perfect tense; while, the emphasis is on the activity when using the past perfect continuous.

A License to Kill

Can you imagine an eleven-year-old having a license to operate a rifle and kill a duck?  Based on our community center’s catalog, kids as young as eleven years old can take a hunter training course and upon completing the course, they are allowed to use a shotgun and hunt for animals unaccompanied by any adult.  I was so shock to learn so I searched online and found out that a youth as young as nine years old can obtain a license to kill unaccompanied after completing a Hunter Education Training Course.  Wow!  Talking about independence and leaving all the responsibilities to the kids.  A nine-year-old child is still a child needing plenty of guidance from the adults.
